The novel addresses the themes of loyalty, honor, and the struggle for survival in a time of political upheaval, as well as the nature of heroism and the moral ambiguity of political violence. Also, this book does a good job of vividly describing the natural environment of the French coast.

Conrad was born in Berdychiv, Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire), grew up in a Polish aristocratic family, was educated in Poland and Switzerland, and at the age of 16 embarked on a merchant ship. Over the next 20 years, he sailed many parts of the world, including Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
Conrad's experiences at sea profoundly influenced his writing. His best-known works, such as "Heart of Darkness", "Lord Jim" and "Nostromo", deal with themes of imperialism, colonialism, and the struggle for self-discovery in the face of adversity.
Conrad became a British citizen in 1886 and shortly thereafter he began writing in English.
