Passed over in this anthology, which is intended for general readership, are all references to the four-dimensional doubly extensive polyphony of Green III (interested parties are referred to "Time in Reverse, or the Musical Granny Knot," by Alfid Carp, Papers of the Rigel Musicological Society) or, for reasons of local censorship, the notices regarding Shem VI, VII and IX and the racial-sex "music" which is common on those planets.

His first work was a short story published in Cosmos magazine in 1953, but his career as a writer can be said to have begun in 1959 when he began writing for Astounding and Galaxy Science Fiction. He co-wrote Brain Twister, the first novel in the "Psi-Power" series, written with Randall Garrett under the joint pseudonym Mark Phillips. The novel was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960, and was published in book form in 1962. Janifer's best-known work is the "Survivor" series, which consists of five novels and many short stories. The series tells the story of Gerald Knave, who visits a planet on the outskirts of the civilized galaxy (and survives to tell the tale).
In addition to her career as a novelist and short story writer, Janifer was an editor at the Scott Meredith Literary Agency, editor/managing editor for various detective and science fiction publications, film critic for several magazines, and a talented pianist.
