헨리 데이비드 소로(Henry David Thoreau, 1817년 7월 12일 - 1862년 5월 6일)는 미국의 시인, 수필가, 철학자, 자연주의자로 자연 환경에서의 단순한 생활에 대한 성찰을 다룬 책 Walden으로 가장 잘 알려져 있다. 그는 초월주의 운동의 지도적 인물이었으며 그의 글은 미국 문학과 철학에 영향을 미쳤다.
Thoreau는 1817년 매사추세츠 주 콩코드에서 태어나, 하버드 대학교에서 고전 언어와 문학을 공부했다. 1837년에 졸업한 후 그는 콩코드의 한 학교에서 잠시 교사 생활을 한 후, 1845년에 그는 Walden Pond에 작은 오두막을 짓고 그곳에서 2년 동안 살면서 1854년에 출판된 Walden을 저술했다.
Walden에서 Thoreau는 사람들이 삶을 단순화하고 자연과 조화롭게 살아야 한다고 주장하였고, 당대의 물질주의와 순응성을 비판한다. Walden은 아름다운 산문과 인간 조건에 대한 통찰력으로 찬사를 받고있다.
