Summary
The novel deals with the lives of three characters. John Amherst, a young idealistic doctor who works in a textile mill in North Dormer; Justine Brent, a nurse who works in a factory and is involved in labor organizing; and Bessy Westmore, the wealthy owner of a mill dying from a chronic illness.
