Alan Edward Nourse (1928 - 1992) was an American science fiction writer and medical practitioner. He has written not only various genres of science fiction, but also books on medicine and science. He also used pen names such as Al Edwards and Doctor X.
Born in Iowa in 1928, Nurse earned his doctorate in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1955. After a brief period as an intern, he began practicing medicine in Washington state and during this time engaged in vigorous writing.
While attending medical school, he wrote science fiction manuscripts and sold them to popular magazines to raise money for his tuition. Through these activities, he became friendly with famous science fiction writer Robert Heinlein, and Heinlein dedicated the work "Farnham's Freehold" to Nurse.
He is famous for utilizing his medical knowledge in his works, and he remained active publishing his science fiction works even after his retirement as a medical practitioner.
