Summary
The comet was the only thing in the whole sky. All the stars were smothered by the light of its copper-yellow flame, and, although the sun had set two hours ago, the Earth was lit as with the glow of a thunderous dawn.
In Mayfield, Ken Maddox walked slowly along Main Street, avoiding collisions with other people whose eyes were fixed on the object in the sky. Ken had spent scores of hours observing the comet carefully, both by naked eye and with his 12-inch reflecting telescope. Still he could not keep from watching it as he picked his way along the street toward the post office.
레이먼드 피셔 존스(Raymond Fisher Jones)는 미국의 SF 작가다. 그는 1952년 소설 This Island Earth 로 가장 잘 알려져 있으며, 이 소설은 1955년 영화로 각색 되기도 했다.
존스의 단편 소설 대부분은 1940년대, 1950년대, 1960년대에 Thrilling Wonder Stories , Astounding Stories 및 Galaxy 와 같은 잡지에 출판되었다 . 그의 16편의 소설은 1951년에서 1978년 사이에 출판되었다.
Analog Science Fiction and Fact 1966년 4월호에 처음 출판된 그의 단편 소설 "Rat Race"는 휴고상 후보에 올랐다. 1996년 놀라운 이야기(Astounding Stories) 1945년 4월 판에 처음 출판된 "통신 강좌"는 최고의 단편 소설 부문 레트로 휴고상 후보에 올랐다. 또 다른 단편 소설인 "The Alien Machine"은 Thrilling Wonder Stories 의 1949년 6월 판에 처음 출판되었으며 나중에 "The Shroud of Secrecy" 및 "The Greater Confluence"라는 두 단편 소설과 결합해 출판하였다.

Best known for Island Earth, the novel was also adapted into a film in 1955.
Most of Jones's short stories were published in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s in magazines such as Thrilling Wonder Stories, Astounding Stories, and Galaxy. His 16 novels were published between 1951 and 1978.

His short story "Rat Race," first published in the April 1966 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, was nominated for a Hugo Award. In 1996, "Correspondence Course," first published in the April 1945 edition of Astounding Stories, was nominated for a Retro Hugo Award for best short story. Another short story, "The Alien Machine", was first published in the June 1949 edition of Thrilling Wonder Stories and was later combined with two other short stories, "The Shroud of Secrecy" and "The Greater Confluence".
