Kahlil Gibran (real name: Gibran Kahlil Gibran bin Mikhail bin Saad, Arabic: جبران خليل جبران ب ميخائيل بن سعد, Gibran Kahlil Gibran) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer. He was born in the village of Bshahri in modern Lebanon, then part of Ottoman Syria. When he was young, his family immigrated to the United States. He studied art in the United States and began his artistic career. The 1923 work The Prophet, considered his representative work, is one of a series of philosophical essays written in English prose. An early example of inspired writing, the book received a cold critical reception, but it sold well and became one of the most popular works of counterculture in the 1960s.
