With his calm demeanor and general friendliness, he joins the inner circle of the Arden family, an aristocratic clan whose once exuberant stars have recently gone into obscurity by murdering one of them without paying their debts. While Longcluse woos her lovely Alice, she befriends her brother Richard. But one night he visits a gambling club, recognizes Longcluse, and comes face-to-face with Monsieur Lebas, a brutal figure who is found murdered later that evening.

Le Fanu has written in several genres, but is best known for his horror novels. He was meticulous and often used plots and ideas from his earlier books in his subsequent works. This can be seen in the fact that many of his novels are extensions and refinements of his earlier short stories. He focused on atmosphere and causal relationships rather than 'straight horror', and liked to leave important details unexplained and mysterious.
