In the Closed Room author Frances Hodgson Burnett spent several years as her young wife and mother in Paris, and her own life experiences and observations, including in her novella Le Monsieur de la Petite Dame, helped Burnett to live in France. It had a great influence on the series of stories it set up. The story tells the cultural differences between Americans and French through the lens of a newly arrived American family and the French grandmother they meet.

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) was an English-American playwright and author. She is best known for her fairy tales, particularly The Secret Garden (1911) and Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886). Her first account appeared in Godey's Lady's Book in 1868. Her main writing talent was combining romantic plots with realistic details of working-class life. Her first novel was published in 1877. Lass o' Lowrie's was the story of life in Lancashire. After she moved to Washington, D.C., Burnett wrote the novels Haworth's (1879), Louisiana (1880), A Fair Barbarian (1881), and Through One Administration (1883) and the play Esmeralda (1881) with William. Her later works include Sara Crewe, or What Happened at Miss Minchin's (1888). It was later republished as A Little Princess (1905). and A Lady of Quality (1896) - considered one of the best of her plays. The Lost Prince was published in 1915 and The Head of the House of Coombe was published in Canada in 1922. During World War I, Burnett put her own beliefs about what happens after her death into writing in her novel The White People (1917).
