졸라의 삶과 작품은 여러 역사적 연구의 대상이 되어 왔다. 문학 구성에 있어 졸라는 특히 제2제국 시기 프랑스 사회를 묘사한 20권의 소설 대작, 수세대에 걸친 루공-마카르 가문의 역정을 보여주며 소설의 대상이 된 각각의 이들을 통해 시대와 특정 세대를 표현한 《루공-마카르 총서》로 알려져 있다.
