Journey to the Center of the Earth (French _ Voyage au Center de la Terre) is a classic science fiction novel by Jules translated under the variant titles A Journey to the Center of the Earth and A Journey to the Interior of the Earth. Bern. The book was first published in French in 1864 and then republished in revised and expanded editions in 1867. Professor Otto Lidenbrock is the central character in the story, an eccentric German scientist who believes there is a volcanic tube leading to the center of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their Icelandic guide Hans descended to Iceland's famous inactive volcano Snæfellsjökull, after which they descended into caves, boreal tornadoes, subterranean seas, Mesozoic and Cenozoic (1867 revisions are chapters 37-39, prehistoric times). Added additional data, and eventually the three explorers are ejected back to the surface by Stromboli, an active volcano located in southern Italy.
